Mary Phelps Jacob was born in April 20, 1891 in New Rochelle, New York nicknaming herself "Polly". She was the daughter of a prominent New England family. She was not born into a rich family but as a child, she had many privileges in her education. She was sent to private schools and took dancing and horse riding lessons although she was not very interested. At age 19, Mary Phelps Jacob received her first bra patent for the first modern brassiere with acceptance in November 3, 1914. In 1915, at age 24, Mary married Richard Rogers Peabody. Richard was the son of one of the three great New England families. In 1916 and 1917, Polly and Peabody have two children. Her husband would only be interested in drinking, playing, and chasing fire engines. She then found herself living a difficult life and divorced. She eventually re married to a guy named Harry Grew Crosby at age 28 in September 9, 1922. He was a very wealthy man that fell in love with her when they first met in a short period of time of two hours.
Mary Phelps Jacob published an autobiography in the year 1953. In the last years of her life she tried to build a citizen center to bring political leaders together but failed. She died in Rome because of her heart in 1970 at the age of 79.
